Erin and I were fortunate enough to experience 3 concerts over the course of three weeks from the latter part of February to the first week in March 2012. We started with Death Cab for Cutie, who I like, but had never seen live. They absolutely rocked! I am still amazed that they were able to recreate their sound live, there was not one thing missing from the versions you hear on their albums. We had the pleasure of introducing several other people to Death Cab and they all left happy.
For the second concert, we switched gears and went for Alt-Country star, Ryan Adams. This was a long time coming for Erin and I, both of us have been wanting to see him since we lived in Colorado (at least six years ago). He definitely did not disappoint. Ryan is touring for his new album, Ashes and Fire, but he played quite a majority of his older songs at this venue. He also spent a surprising amount of time joking and interacting with the audience. This included a song that appeared to be made up on the spot after a guy sneezed one time too many between songs. He also suggested that a young man in the front take his girlfriend for some ice cream after the show, because she was obviously not into his music. He told the dude she obviously loved him very much, because she dressed up in a leopard print dress and came to the show with him even though she is put off by the music. All in all, it was a great night.
Finally, we saw Bon Iver at a newer venue called Red Hill. I enjoyed the outdoor amphitheater, I will be going back there for sure. My only complaint would be that they sold too many tickets. We arrived at the gate thirty minutes after they opened and the entire amphitheater was full. We ended up with decent seats on a hill beside the stage, real close to the band. I would recommend being there when the gates open for any future shows. As for the show, I can honestly say they exceeded every expectation I had. This was hands down the best of the three shows and that is saying a lot. The show consisted of an eight or nine piece band and the sound was amazing. They opened with "Perth" off of their new album, the whole crowd went wild. I was able to record several songs on my iPhone and will attempt to post them here. They are fairly large files, so I will probably have to trim them. I also recorded just the audio of "Calgary" including the intro where a dude snuck on stage and popped open a beer in front of the mic. Hopefully, I can load that as well, because it was a funny little moment between the band and this drunk dude as well as being a decent recording of the song considering it was taken on my phone with the voice memos app. Enjoy the vids and hopefully the audio. Leave a comment if you like what you hear.
