Random thoughts in order to force myself to post

So I kind of missed the entire month of February for blogging...at least it's the shortest month of the year. Life has been flying by at a pretty quick pace the last few weeks. I have now played in a total of 6 hockey games (yes!) and every single minute of them has been sweet. Tiresome, sure. Embarrassing, most of the time. Epic, without a doubt. I have been slowly improving on my skates and puck handling skills, I can't argue with progress (even if it is slow). I actually scored an assist in my game a few weeks ago. It was a beautiful play, but if I was to break it down I would have to say that it was about 85% hustle, 10% luck and 5% skill. Regardless, I am actually involved in most plays and feel like I am contributing to the team. It's Progress. Speaking of slow progress, the bass has been going better the last couple of weeks. I haven't had much time to mess around outside of practice on Thursdays and service on Sunday, but I'm starting to feel more like a musician than a dude who is just standing up there with the band. Fills and Bass Lines have been entering my brain constantly and some of them actually sound decent when played. The hardest thing is to hear a line in my head and then try to find the song that it would fit best with. I guess that's a better problem than not hearing the line in the first place. Tyler and I have messed around with a couple chord progressions that he has put together. We've only spent a few minutes on each one, but they actually sound pretty good. Last time, he used some lyrics that I had saved to my iPhone a few months ago. Some of my lyrics were decent enough and they sounded pretty good with the song he was working on. Who knows, we might actually have a song before it's all said and done. I wish I had more time for those kinds of sessions, being creative musically is something that I would like to explore more.
I was talking to somebody the other day, sorry I don't remember who, about how everything I do for fun/leisure is new to me. I've been playing the bass for 7 months or so, hockey for just a few weeks, ice skating for not much longer than that. It's kind of cool, at this point in my life, to be doing two of the things that I have always dreamed of. I'm hoping that my hockey skills develop as quickly as my music skills have. Not that I'm great at music, just that I am now able to confidently play what is before me and continue to learn from the people around me. Hockey will be similar, I hope, except with the bass if I screw up, I have the chance that the rest of the band will cover it up. In hockey, it's pretty obvious if you miss a play or are just not at the same skill level as other players. Regardless, my team is great, they have been encouraging and have helped me greatly over the last few weeks. I can't wait till next season after I have more skating time under my belt. It's going to be tough around PFD time, I will have to decide between a new Bass and new skates (maybe even a new stick). Time will tell which obsession wins out this year. For now, I am content to be a 33 year old man that is blessed with the best wife in the world(most beautiful among women), two great kids and almost enough free time in the day to write this blog...back to work.
